Aliens

2022

Aliens is an immersive First Person Shooter made by Survios.  It features an original story set in the universe of the beloved IP, promising to deliver on the fantasy of the Aliens film.  The gorgeous industrial and organic environments were interactive as well, as players needed to manage lights, smoke, elements such as fire and acide, and any other advantage they could get to not run afoul of the Xenomorphs, ever present and ever terrifying.

Due to being unreleased and a licensed IP, I can only share media available through official channels, like the key art.

As a Senior Technical Designer I worked on a large variety of design and engineering tasks on this project, running in Unreal Engine 5.

The standout feature was my work as Lead Design on the Motion Tracker feature team.  I coordinated a multi-disciplinary team to create this iconic object from the Aliens universe with our own visual design.  A key concern was how to make using the device feel like a tactical choice, and not like just another mini-map.

More technical work was done on the Crafting System, defining the anatomy of a crafting recipe for our game, including non-standard recipes, recipes granted as loot, and recipes required for story progression.

I also prototyped our Immersive Sim gameplay system, building a malleable systems using Unreal's Gameplay Ability System as a driver.  Items could not only react to outside stimuli such as heat and acid blood, but they could also have variable tolerances to these stimuli, as well as gain new reactions through gameplay such as soaking objects in fuel to set them on fire later.
